Why this conversation matters right now

Independent film has never had more tools—or more noise. On the Future Proof Business Podcast, I (Jaze Bordeaux) share a practical playbook for turning creative vision into a sustainable business: how to finance projects, steward IP over the long term, and market smarter in an algorithmic landscape. If you’re a filmmaker, founder, or creator building outside the studio system, this one’s for you.

From finance to filmmaking

My career started in business and finance, and that background still shapes how I build films today. We get into:

  • Portfolio thinking for films: treating each project like an asset with distinct risk/return.

  • Cash-flow awareness: development, production, post, and marketing burn—plus how timing kills (or compounds) momentum.

  • Data-informed creativity: pairing taste with signals from audience behavior, festivals, and platform trends.

The making of EFC: patience is a strategy

We talk about EFC, my debut feature that’s earned international recognition, and the years of iteration behind it. Key lessons:

  • Proof beats promises: short tests, sizzle, and festival signals help unlock partners without overselling.

  • Build the bench: relationships with producers, composers, festival programmers, and journalists compound across projects.

  • Slow is smooth; smooth is fast: the right timing—release windows, press cycles, and platform negotiations—can be more valuable than rushing to “done.”

Financing & deal structure: think like an operator

  • Stacking capital: blending private investment, presales, tax incentives, and distribution advances to reduce exposure.

  • Milestone gates: green-lighting in phases (script → cast attachments → soft money → distribution) to protect downside.

  • Investor alignment: clear waterfalls, transparent reporting, and a realistic post-theatrical plan.

Distribution that compounds IP

Distribution is not the end of the road; it’s the start of IP stewardship.

  • Windowing with intent: festivals → transactional → subscription → free/AVOD to keep discovery loops fresh.

  • Own the relationship: newsletters, community, and social help move audiences from one release to the next.

  • Format agility: trailers, vertical cuts, director’s diaries, and podcast rounds extend the life of every asset.

Marketing in the attention economy

  • Story > spend: position your project around a big, clean promise—what do viewers get in 10 seconds?

  • Native creativity: design for where people watch—9×16 verticals, captions-first, and platform-specific hooks.

  • Earned + owned + paid: stack festival PR, social clips, and selective media buys to push breakthrough moments.

Mindset for the long game

I share a mantra on the show: “Nobody comes from nowhere.” Talent compounds through consistent reps, honest feedback, and relentless iteration. If you’re early in the journey:

  • Ship small, often. Shorts, scenes, and teasers build proof and partners.

  • Track outcomes. What headlines, thumbnails, or festival write-ups move the needle? Keep score.

  • Protect creative energy. Systems beat willpower—calendars, checklists, and rituals make momentum inevitable.
